Getting A Domain Name

Every website on the Internet has a Domain Name.  It's their Internet address.  Getting one is easy, but as with everything, it can be done badly.  You may have seen the TV ads for cheap websites, well, you get what you pay for.  Cheap very often equals no support when there's a problem, and should you forget to renew your website when the time comes, you may not be able to get it back, which will cause all sorts of very bad problems!

HDR recommends and uses Network Solutions to obtain domain names.  Their website is www.netsol.com.  When you go to their site, you can type in a desired domain name, and they will tell you if it's available.  You'll also see a number of extensions, such as .com, .net, .org and so on.  Most people prefer the .com extension, but if your desired name is not available as a .com, you may have to choose a .net or other extension, or, look for a different name.

Once you find a suitable name and extension, you can purchase it using a credit card.  You can select how many years you want to take out the name, and you'll notice it gets cheaper as the number of years increases.

This is a free service we offer.  You will still have to pay for the actual Domain Name, but we won't charge you for our time to set it all up.  And of course, you can still take it out yourself if you wish.

You'll be asked a lot of questions, and it's very important you keep a record of how you answer those questions, especially the username and password.  Should a problem arise, you will need that information in order to correct it - so write it down or print the page and keep it in a safe place.

You'll be asked for owner's information (you) and technical support information (us).  If you don't list yourself as the owner, then you won't be able to make any changes, such as renewals, later on.

After that, we will set up space on our servers for your website, create a login account, and you will be ready to start the design work!
